COMPETITION COLLABORATION

PIERSTER

Pierster is a new port and museum building in Miami Beach. The geometry consists of three interwoven hexagonal elements. The density of the pattern increases gradually towards the defining edges of the volume thus combining surface-based and member-based structures within the same system. The structural system and the rotating sections are the space-defining elements. The space repeatedly but gradually changes between inside and outside, northside and southside, sun and shade. As the visitor wanders through the building he feels the changing structural systems as varying sunlight on his face. The spotty light animates the spaces and enhances the twisting logic of the surfaces.
